Project Description

Source Material (SM) is a student-led publication at ArtCenter College of Design dedicated to cultivating multidisciplinary collaboration between different academic majors through its biannual print publication and workshops.
Formed in the summer of 2021, SM was a direct response to the isolation created by the pandemic and the institution’s historical siloing students within their majors. As a result, the theme of SM’s first issue became Missed Connections. Through illustrations, photography, and writing, we asked students to recount memorable—but fleeting—moments of connection between themselves and their peers.
As one of SM’s founding editors, I helped recruit the editorial team that served SM’s first two issues. In addition to contributing to the publication’s design, I also oversaw planning and budget. As a result, SM raised over $7,000 for SM’s first two issues from different departments at ArtCenter, including direct financial support from the Provost’s Office.

Production: From printing and collating to folding to stapling, every phase of production was handled on-campus by the editorial team over the course of several weekends.

4

Distribution: Custom shelves we built with resources on campus to house the publication. We used these as distribution points for the publication and stationed them on both of ArtCenter’s separate campuses.

5–8

Design: Select layouts. The format allowed for various reading experiences and revealed playful combinations of colors and images.
